In November 2017, a single act of honesty completely transformed the life of a homeless man from New Haven, Connecticut. Elmer Alvarez discovered a misplaced check worth nearly $11,000. Instead of trying to cash it, he tracked down the owner and returned it. He could never have imagined that this simple good deed would not only make headlines but also end his years of homelessness.
The check belonged to real estate agent Roberta Hoskie, who had accidentally dropped it while running errands in the busy city. When Alvarez returned it, Hoskie was astonished—not just that her money was safe, but that a homeless man had gone out of his way to return it. Deeply moved by his honesty, she first offered him a monetary reward, but soon realized she could do even more to help him.

Hoskie arranged housing for Alvarez and later enrolled him in a job training program at her school. He studied for a real estate exam and finally gained the stability he had been missing for years. A video capturing the emotional moment when Hoskie told Alvarez he would no longer have to sleep on the streets quickly went viral, inspiring millions.
Their connection didn’t stop there. By January 2019, Alvarez and Hoskie announced plans to create transitional housing for homeless teens and young adults. Alvarez shared that the project would provide essential support to help others avoid the hardships he had endured. “I know what it’s like to be homeless. Nobody deserves to live like that,” he told CBS News, emphasizing the importance of giving back.
Hoskie’s compassion stemmed from her own past. Years earlier, she had faced homelessness as a single mother struggling to survive. Her journey from poverty to becoming a successful real estate agent gave her a deep understanding of Alvarez’s struggles. Today, she continues her real estate work while sharing her story in her book Poverty Curse Broken: The Roberta Hoskie Story, showing that with kindness, determination, and faith, it’s possible to break the cycle of hardship.
