I confronted them directly in the staff room, forcing a smile so as not to ruin the mood for people who had worked with me for years. My patience finally ran out. I collected all the security camera footage from the past few weeks, printed screenshots, and took everything to the police. I thought: let the professionals handle this, find the thief, return my goods, or at least catch the person brazenly taking what wasn’t theirs.
But when the police reviewed the footage, we all saw something in the security office that we never expected — and it was far worse than ordinary theft.
On the video, among the regular customers, there was always a woman in a wheelchair. She slowly rolled between the aisles, smiling at the staff and receiving sympathetic glances from shoppers. The footage clearly showed her carefully placing the most expensive cheeses and premium coffee into the basket of her wheelchair. She would then skillfully hide the items under a blanket or in a bag, occasionally distracting the clerk by asking for a price check or summoning the manager. Anyone passing by would hesitate to look too closely, seeing only a sick woman who deserved assistance and compassion.
The most bitter part — she wasn’t actually disabled. From her movements and from footage showing her later leaving the store without the wheelchair, it became clear that this was a carefully planned deception.
The police promised to proceed cautiously. They knew that accusing someone of faking a disability and theft would attract public attention. Before taking any action, they started gathering evidence, documenting repeated footage, and looking for witnesses.
