Iconic actor Tom Cruise has finally received an Oscar! The 63-year-old star was awarded one of the Academy’s highest honors, an Honorary Award, at the Governors Awards ceremony on November 16. Cruise delivered an emotional and powerful speech, celebrating the transformative power of cinema.
The award was presented to him by director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is collaborating with Cruise on a new film set to be released in 2026.

In his speech, Cruise emphasized that filmmaking is not just a profession for him — it is the essence of his life:

“Making movies is not what I do; it’s who I am.”
The 63-year-old actor also recalled how his love for cinema began in childhood:
“I was just a little boy in a darkened theater, and I remember that beam of light cutting through the room… Suddenly the world felt so much bigger than the one I knew. It opened my imagination to the possibility that life could extend far beyond the limits I then perceived.”
Cruise explained that this “beam of light” ignited in him a desire to “explore the world,” a drive he continues to follow to this day.
The red carpet was filled with A-list stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael B. Jordan, and Sydney Sweeney. They attended the event to support their colleagues and kick off the awards season.
Cruise received his first Oscar amid thunderous applause from the audience.
It’s worth noting that Cruise had been nominated four times before — for his roles in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia, as well as as a producer for Top Gun: Maverick. However, this was his first Oscar, and it was the honorary statuette.
