The little girl was walking back from school, clutching her bag stuffed with notebooks and struggling with a scarf slipping from her shoulder. The courtyard was empty and eerily quiet. Only one person stood near the entrance.
It was a tall man in a long black coat. His scarf and raised collar hid part of his face, but it was enough to make him look intimidating. He kept glancing around before staring at the building again, as if waiting for someone.
Her heart pounded as she remembered her father’s warnings. Then the man noticed her. His eyes darkened, his steps quickened, and he began closing the distance. The street was deserted—no cars, no pedestrians.
The girl panicked but suddenly thought: “Light! Noise!”
She darted to the stairwell, flicked on all the lights, and pounded her fists on the nearest door.
“Help! Help!” she cried, her voice trembling with fear.
