The elderly woman lay in a hospital bed, barely breathing. Her condition had worsened day by day over the past few weeks, and there was almost no hope left. The doctors had been frank — her time was measured not in days, but in hours.
She could no longer eat and barely responded to those around her, only occasionally opening her eyes and slowly scanning the room. None of her relatives had come — they simply didn’t exist. She was completely alone.
The only person who visited her every day was a young nurse. The nurse herself didn’t know why she had grown attached to this woman — maybe because she reminded her of her own grandmother, or maybe simply because she felt sorry for her.
Every day, the nurse tried to cheer the patient up, changed the bed linens, brought water, and sometimes read her short news articles aloud.
That evening, the woman was breathing so heavily that the nurse immediately understood: the end was near. She sat down beside her, took the woman’s cold, dry hand in hers, and softly said:
