Wings of Hope: How a Mississippi Mom Transformed an Abandoned Airplane into a Cozy Home for Her Kids

Jo Ann Asseri’s world was turned upside down in 1993 when a devastating disaster hit Benoit, Mississippi, destroying her home. Suddenly homeless with her two children, she faced an uncertain and overwhelming future.

To make matters worse, her husband passed away shortly after, leaving Jo Ann not only grieving but also struggling financially and without a permanent place to live.

Turning a Plane into a Place to Live

With limited resources, Jo Ann began exploring housing options. A mobile home seemed like a potential solution, but she quickly realized it was far too expensive for her budget.

That’s when her father-in-law, Bob—a former air traffic controller—came up with an unexpected idea: why not convert a retired airplane into a home?

From Runway Relic to Family Residence

Jo Ann embraced the unusual plan and took action. Converting the aircraft cost about $30,000—significantly less than buying a standard home.

The plane, stretching 138 feet long and featuring 76 windows, offered both space and natural light, making it an ideal blank canvas for her new life.

Inside the Jet-Set Home

Jo Ann carefully transformed the aircraft’s interior into a cozy and fully functional home. It included three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen with appliances, and even a laundry area equipped with a washer and dryer. With a phone line and oven also installed, it provided all the comforts of a traditional house.

What began as a last-ditch effort to provide for her family became a creative and inspiring housing solution that drew widespread attention and admiration.
