In an incredible tale of survival, British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh, seated in 11A, emerged as the sole survivor of a devastating Air India crash on Thursday that claimed 241 lives. The Boeing 787-8, en route from Ahmedabad to London, went down moments after takeoff.
Vishwashkumar, originally from India but living in Leicester, managed to walk away with only minor injuries. He later described the harrowing moments: “Just 30 seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise… everything happened so fast.” Disoriented and surrounded by debris and bodies, he fled the wreckage before being taken to hospital.

His brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, told the BBC the family was in complete shock. “He doesn’t know how he survived. When he called, he was only asking us to find Ajay,” he said, referring to another brother who was also on board and remains unaccounted for.

Footage circulating online shows Vishwashkumar, bloodied but conscious, approaching an ambulance with smoke billowing in the background. Later images show him in a hospital bed, where he met Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah.
Indian authorities confirmed the crash occurred less than a minute after takeoff, slamming into a residential area used by medical staff. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Among the victims were 169 Indian nationals and 52 Britons. Several families, including three members of the Gloucester Muslim Society and a spiritual couple from London, are feared lost.

Both King Charles and Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed deep condolences, with crisis support teams activated in both the UK and India. London Gatwick Airport has set up a reception centre for relatives seeking information.
The crash has left families in mourning and communities across multiple nations reeling, while the survival of one man from seat 11A stands as a haunting yet remarkable anomaly amid the tragedy.
