Angie Stone, a legendary singer and founding member of the pioneering hip-hop trio The Sequence, tragically passed away at 63 following a car accident in Mobile, Alabama.
The accident occurred early Saturday morning, devastating her loved ones, many of whom had spoken to her just hours before. Reports indicate that the crash, involving a commercial vehicle, happened around 7 a.m. while Stone was traveling with her bandmates. Though others survived, she was the sole fatality.
Born Angela Brown, Stone leaves behind her son, Michael Archer, 27, daughter, Diamond Stone, 47, and two grandchildren. Diamond confirmed her mother’s passing in an emotional Facebook post, writing, “My mommy is gone.”

Stone rose to fame as a member of The Sequence, one of the first all-female rap groups. Their 1980 hit Funk You Up was later sampled in Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk and Dr. Dre’s Keep Their Heads Ringin’. After her tenure with the group from 1979 to 1985, she launched a successful solo career in the late 1990s.
Her 1999 debut album, Black Diamond, achieved gold status in the U.S., and her 2001 record, Mahogany Soul, produced hits like Brotha, No More Rain, and Wish I Didn’t Miss You, with the latter reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart.

In recognition of her impact, Stone and her fellow members of The Sequence were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2024.
Beyond music, fans may remember her from VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club and R&B Divas: Atlanta, as well as film roles in The Hot Chick (2002), The Fighting Temptations (2003), and Ride Along (2014). She also built a strong presence on YouTube.

In a heartfelt social media post on January 13, Stone reflected on her career:
“I’ve been in the game for 50 years. My first solo album is 25 years old. I’ve put in a lot of work over the years. God gave me this gift and I have shared it with the world.”
“Even at this point, I am asking my creator what is next because I have so much more to give.”
