Video of Chinese woman eating whole bat in fancy restaurant

Delicacies in the oriental style.

A video from an expensive restaurant in China is circulating online. It shows a female customer eating a whole bat.

Another viral video shows a bat in soup served at a restaurant.

This is especially striking against the backdrop of the deadly coronavirus epidemic that broke out in Wuhan. The new virus, which has already killed 25 people and infected more than 800, has led to the introduction of emergency measures in the metropolis of 11 million.

Scientists suggest that the virus could have been transmitted to humans from snakes or bats.

In China, bats (and snakes) are not only eaten, but also used in folk medicine. They are believed to help with coughs, malaria, and gonorrhea.

Even bat excrement is put to use: according to traditional beliefs, it can cure eye diseases.

Due to the spread of the virus, strict quarantine measures have been introduced in 13 cities in China. In particular, communication with Wuhan has been suspended, airports and railway stations have been closed. Public transport has stopped working in a number of cities, and cinemas and other establishments have been closed in some.

The World Health Organization said on January 23 that it was too early to declare the pneumonia outbreak in China a public health emergency of international concern, but it did declare a local emergency.
