Today, the first person in the world to undergo a face transplant got married. The wedding ceremony took place on a peninsula in Hawaii. The 34-year-old bride wore a white strapless dress with a voluminous skirt, adding a light flower to her hairstyle. Joe DiMeo, the groom, chose a white shirt and beige suit, completing his look with a wreath of intertwined leaves.
Joe and Jessica Kobi kept the celebration intimate. During the small ceremony, the couple exchanged vows of fidelity to one another.
Joe’s life changed drastically six years ago after a car accident. He fell asleep at the wheel after a night shift, crashing into a curb. The car caught fire, and two passersby saved him, though Joe suffered third-degree burns.
The young man underwent over 20 surgeries. In August 2020, doctors from Langone Health at New York University performed a successful 23-hour surgery to transplant his face and both arms. The chances of success were only 6%. The donor was a 48-year-old man who passed away from a stroke. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime gift, and I hope the family can find some comfort knowing that part of the donor lives on with me. My parents and I are very grateful for the second chance I’ve been given,” Joe said at the time.
Recovery and starting a new life became Joe’s main goal, and his meeting with Jessica Kobi helped him on this path. They connected through social media due to their shared love of dogs. A year ago, the couple bought a house together, and in mid-November, Joe proposed to Jessica, and she said yes.
