A child from Michigan was more than prepared for her close-up after being prohibited from taking school photos due to her red, braided hair extensions, which were against dress code regulations.

During a recent, customized photo session with Jermaine Horton Photography, 8-year-old Marian Scott was beaming, sporting some chic attire and the red strands in her hair.

According to WLIX, the third-grader’s hair extensions prevented him from posing for photo day at Paragon Charter Academy in Jackson back in October. According to Today, the girl was devastated by the occurrence, and her parents said they were unaware that the vibrant braids were prohibited.

At the time, Doug Scott, the girl’s father, told Today that Marian had to stand in the hallway while everyone was snapping pictures. She couldn’t represent the school, they argued.

“It breaks my heart to see my daughter cry because she is always happy,” he continued.

According to WLIX, there was no explicit instruction on what would happen if a student showed up for picture day with bright hair, even though the Paragon Charter Academy manual specifies that hair color “must be of natural tones.”

Marian’s parents eventually pulled her out of school over the incident, and she was sent back to class without having her picture taken.

The community soon learned of the situation, and “dozens” of photographers reached out to the family, offering to do a special picture session for Marian to help her feel more confident following the distressing experience.

In an attempt to turn bad things around and make the girl smile, photographer Jermain Horton traveled from Chicago for a cheerful portrait session earlier this month. Mieka Joi, CEO of Rich Girl Candy and Joy Entertainment and Event Management, also participated in the major photo opportunity by contributing a wardrobe for the third grader to wear in the photos.

Marian told WLIX of the unique occasion, “It was fun, you got to pose and change clothes and got to be yourself.”

Horton, on the other hand, claimed that being involved was just the moral thing to do.

He posted on Facebook, saying, “As a parent, I was incensed when I heard about this story because my first thought was the impact of what this would do to such a beautiful little girl.”

“I feel quite fortunate to have contributed to giving her a fantastic day that demonstrated to her that she is incredibly gorgeous, and her hair color was great! We kept it for the shoot, of course! Regarding the student’s now-signature hairstyle, Horton noted.

According to WLIX, the Scott family has expressed their immense gratitude for the overwhelming support that Marian’s tale has received. Doug intends to continue participating in local conversations on fair school policies going forward.
