Princess Diana will always be dearly missed by royal fans, but she lives on through her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as her Spencer family members, who strive to honor her memory in meaningful ways. Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, shared a heartfelt glimpse into her childhood with a throwback family photo posted on his Instagram.

In the sepia-toned image, a young Diana is seen posing in front of a window for a family portrait, alongside her father, John Spencer, who is dressed in a suit and tie. Diana’s two sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, smile brightly at the camera, while Charles, sporting a small suit and bowl haircut, offers a subtle smirk. Diana, seated on the far right, gazes over her shoulder with a serious expression, holding onto the window curtain as though unaware a photo was being taken. At the time, she was likely between 10 and 11 years old, with sharp bangs and a sweet layered long-sleeve top paired with a skirt. Charles captioned the photo, “Family photograph, 1972.”

Charles also opened up about the challenges they faced growing up without their mother. “Diana and I had two older sisters who were away at school, so she and I were very much in it together and I did talk to her about it,” he shared in a 2020 interview. “Our father was a quiet and constant source of love, but our mother wasn’t cut out for maternity. Not her fault, she couldn’t do it. She was in love with someone else—infatuated, really.”

He went on to explain that Diana “was the big sister who mothered me as a baby… and endured those long train journeys between our parents’ homes with me on weekends.”
