A newborn elephant had a narrow escape from a crocodile attack—thanks to the quick intervention of its mother.
While the young calf was playing near the deeper end of a watering hole in the African wilderness, a crocodile suddenly lunged from the water and clamped its jaws around the elephant’s trunk.
Startled and alarmed, the rest of the elephant herd watched in shock, trumpeting and snorting as they scrambled to help the helpless baby fight off the predator.
Summoning surprising strength, the calf managed to pull away from the crocodile and stumbled backward, forcing the reptile to retreat into the murky water.
The dramatic moment was captured by photographer and farmer Francois Borman near Mana Pools in Zimbabwe’s Zambezi Valley. “This was the last thing I expected to witness,” Borman said. “I had been out in the bush for hours just hoping for any kind of wildlife action.”

The scene unfolded as a local crocodile spotted a group of young elephants approaching to drink and carefully watched them, sizing up a playful calf splashing around in the shallow water.
“The little elephant was clearly thrilled to be near the water—he leapt into the deeper part and started rolling around, squealing with excitement,” Borman recalled.
But the joy quickly turned into terror.

The crocodile, lurking nearby, launched itself at the calf and clamped down on its trunk. The calf let out a panicked cry and began thrashing wildly, trying to break free.
What followed was an intense struggle for survival. Despite being so young and vulnerable, the baby elephant resisted with remarkable determination. With a desperate yank, it nearly dragged the crocodile out of the water.

As more elephants rushed in to help, the crocodile finally let go.
The herd had saved one of their youngest.
Borman, who captured the gripping sequence on camera, said, “When I reviewed the shots, I was thrilled—I knew this was something rare. Moments like this are what wildlife photographers dream of. We spend hours, days even, for the chance to witness something truly extraordinary.”
