Most of us undoubtedly have happy childhood memories of visiting the zoo. It was an amazing experience to look forward to witnessing exotic animals that we had only read about in books. It sounded like a fairy tale, with the large, beautiful elephants waiting for the guests to feed them a peanut or two, or the orangutans mimicking our movements and waving back.
However, as we grew older, we came to understand that this enjoyable time for us humans is actually suffering and anguish for all those animals who have been deprived of their natural home and imprisoned for financial gain.
Some contend that we aid in the preservation of animals by keeping them in zoos. We claim that we must figure out ways to safeguard them while they are still in the wild if we truly want them to survive into the future.
A beautiful bear named Fifi spent thirty years in a cage. She had to spend years of her life entertaining the crowds after being sent to the Pennsylvania Zoo while she was still a cub.
Fifi lived in appalling conditions and entertained the guests with tricks, just like at the circus.
Fortunately, Fifi was saved from years of suffering and abuse by the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
The unfortunate animal didn’t even look like a bear when they first saw her. Fifi had arthritis among the others, but she received no treatment for it.
Fifi was quickly taken by PETA to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, where she obtained the urgently needed medical care.
Now that she is separated from the people who hurt her, Fifi is living the life she has always earned.
