I read a story about a man whose life was very different from ours. His name was Amou Haji, and he lived in Iran.
Regardless of their nationality, most people enjoy bathing regularly.
The frequency of showering varies from person to person, but the general idea of maintaining good hygiene remains the same.
Amou Haji, however, had a different perspective. He chose not to shower for 67 years and had his reasons for doing so.
He lived in Iran and was born in 1928 in the town of Dez Gah. Since nobody knew his real name, he was simply called “old man” or “Amou Haji” by the locals.
Amou Haji, known as the ‘World’s Dirtiest Man,’ passed away in 2022 at the age of 94. He had not taken a shower in almost 60 years and lived in a cinder block shanty.
His home was on the outskirts of town and was said to be made of cinder blocks. He didn’t seem to bother anyone with his presence.
When he felt that his hair and beard were getting too long, he would set them on fire. That was the extent of his “hygiene” routine. He had the same gray skin and hair.
Despite not maintaining regular hygiene, he lived to be 94 years old and appeared to be in good health throughout his life.
When it came to drinking water, he wasn’t afraid to drink it from an unclean tin can, reportedly consuming up to five liters daily.
He preferred to scavenge for food on the ground, even when fresh food was offered to him. He claimed that porcupines were his favorite animal and that he preferred eating roadkill.
He was also known to vape animal excrement through a pipe and was reportedly a heavy smoker.
Despite his poor food and hygiene habits, Dr. Gholamreza Molavi from Tehran University of Medical Sciences’ School of Public Health, who examined him prior to his passing, was surprised to find that he was in good health, despite contracting trichinosis, a parasitic infection transmitted by food.
