Before and after: how a house with a hundred years of history was restored.

The customers asked the designer to restore the interior of the old house and at the same time preserve its atmosphere. We’ll tell you what came of it.

Carol Whiting helped her architect husband for more than 20 years and, after their divorce, unexpectedly became the owner of a small design studio in Melbourne.

Carol now has a team of four and clients with interesting projects. For example, one of the customers asked to restore a house with history and at the same time preserve its atmosphere.

What did the house look like before the renovation?

What does the house look like after renovation?

The facade of the building, built at the end of the 19th century, was preserved in its original form – this was the wish of the customers. Only the iron parts, like the balusters on the balcony, were painted black.

Soma Giovanni and Tom Carson, the clients, bought this house from the people who are involved in the construction. Therefore, at the time of purchase, the premises were hastily plastered. Cheap materials were used in the decoration, and the guys decided to restore the original appearance of the house. And at the same time provide everything necessary for a comfortable life.

The first floor was expanded from 80 to 85 square meters. There is a large kitchen for the whole family, a dining room, a living room, a home office, a laundry room and a bathroom.

The kitchen was originally accessed by a passage from the hallway, but Carol decided to completely demolish the wall and add spaciousness to the space. Tom personally laid out one of the walls with bricks. Carol suggested painting it white, but the owner of the house insisted – and in the end everyone was happy.

To zone the kitchen-dining room, the designer installed pantry cabinets. And on the opposite wall I disguised the entrance to the bathroom and laundry room using furniture handles to match the facades. If desired, they can be used as hooks for bags. By the way, all the facades were covered with clapboard.

An old staircase leads to the second floor; it was also restored and repainted. Carol even made use of the space under the steps and created storage cabinets.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms and a bathroom. The bedroom used to have an antique fireplace, which took up a lot of space, so it was abandoned in favor of storage systems. For example, the head of the bed has discreet shelves on either side.

From the master bedroom you can access a French balcony. And from the ground floor you can access the backyard with an outdoor shower. Hidden here is a small shed for storing bicycles and garden supplies – it was also lined with clapboard.
