Before and after: remodeling an old attic bedroom.

This bedroom renovation didn’t even require a budget – the homeowners spent almost nothing. And the result is impressive – see for yourself.

Writer Lisa Przystup and her husband Jonathan Linaberry live in the suburbs of New York. A married couple loves remodeling old interiors and recently completed a renovation of a small attic bedroom. Several packages of paint, new furniture and textiles  are all that was needed for this.

What did the bedroom look like before the renovation?

“Don’t let the pictures scare you—the attic was actually in pretty good shape when we bought the house,” says Lisa Przystup. For example, the flooring did not need to be changed, but the walls only needed to be repainted.

The couple got down to business with great enthusiasm. First, we cleared the space and threw out old things. What happened next?

What changed?

Even at the beginning of the renovation, the couple set themselves a goal – to spend as little money as possible. First of all, we decided to repaint the floors – they left the color dark, it contrasts well with the white walls. The latter, by the way, were also updated with paint .

The renovation turned out to be cosmetic, quick and budget-friendly – but look how the space was transformed.

Both new furniture and old things were brought to the attic – they belonged to Jonathan’s grandfather. For example, the initials GL still remain on the folding chairs – don’t throw away a family heirloom.

The chairs were left in case guests arrived – when folded, they do not take up much space. Lisa and Jonathan keep them next to the small door leading to the attic. We immediately fell in love with the door, so we decided not to change it and restore it.

The bed was installed in an alcove near the window. We immediately decided what to do with the lamps: Jonathan hung them above the bed and secured them on both sides of the ceiling with hooks.

Since the windows in the attic are small, they were covered with Roman blinds in a neutral shade. Visually, they do not overload the interior and provide excellent protection from the morning sun.

What do you think our bedside table looks like? There was a big old slow cooker in Jonathan’s grandmother’s garage. We turned her over and placed her by the bed. And I didn’t even have to buy anything.

There was also room in the attic for a mini-living room – it is separated from the bedroom by a column. The couple got the chest of drawers in the living room area from the previous owners and fits perfectly into the interior.

The furnishings turned out to be modern, albeit with vintage furniture – it gave the interior a special atmosphere that only happens in old houses. And most importantly, I practically didn’t have to buy anything.
