Originating from Thomasville, Georgia, Haile and Ben McCollum set out to find a serene waterfront escape for their family within a 200-mile radius. Drawing inspiration from Haile’s sailing experiences in the Northeast and Ben’s fond summer recollections in St. Teresa, Florida, they sought a straightforward and easily maintainable retreat. St. Teresa, situated just under 2 hours away, proved to be an ideal match, exuding a rustic Panhandle culture that embodied an Old Florida lifestyle.
Despite facing challenges due to the limited availability of properties, the McCollums stumbled upon a rare “for sale” sign and came across a neglected 1939 cottage named “Why Knot.” Despite its initial dilapidated and abandoned appearance, the couple recognized its potential, convinced that a visionary touch could bring it back to life. Adhering to Haile’s “white paint strategy,” they rejuvenated the dwelling with Benjamin Moore’s Super White both inside and out, complemented by Sherwin Williams’ Embellished Blue for the porch ceiling. Vibrant accents, such as Benjamin Moore’s Oceanfront, adorned the screen door.
Opting for a minimalist approach, the McCollums repurposed existing furniture from storage and acquired budget-friendly items like tiles from Lowe’s. The back porch even boasts a farm sink from the McCollums’ residence in Thomasville. Despite the necessary efforts, Haile stresses that they only undertook what was essential to preserve the cottage’s allure.
Utilizing the 2,200 square feet wisely, the first floor encompasses the guest room, kitchen, den, and living room, while the upstairs features the primary bedroom, bunk room, and a bath. Screened front and back porches serve as a shield against the area’s notorious bugs, preserving the laid-back and festive ambiance of the property. Reflecting on the home’s history, Haile reminisces about the tales shared by neighbors, often beginning with rum cocktails on the back porch. The McCollums have successfully breathed new life into this neglected beach cottage, infusing it with timeless charm and a spirit of relaxation.
