It is a black day for world cinema: legendary Canadian actress Catherine O’Hara has passed away at the age of 71. The world will remember her as the eccentric Moira Rose, the caring (if forgetful) mother of Kevin McCallister in Home Alone, and an unmatched queen of transformation. Her final projects were the series The Studio and The Last of Us.
The actress’s manager confirmed the sad news on Friday, January 30, 2026. Catherine died surrounded by her loved ones. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed. Representatives for O’Hara have spoken of a mysterious “brief illness” that claimed her life.

Catherine’s career began in Toronto, where she worked as a waitress at the Second City theatre. Despite skeptical remarks from colleagues—who advised her to “stick to her day job”—she earned a place on stage in 1974. It was there that she met her best friend and longtime creative partner, Eugene Levy. Together they created the cult sketch show SCTV, where O’Hara became a master of parody, famously imitating Meryl Streep and Brooke Shields, and won her first Emmy Award.

Here are the key films and series in Catherine O’Hara’s career:
-
Beetlejuice (1988). Her role as the stepmother Delia Deetz became iconic. It was on this set that Catherine met her future husband, Bo Welch—more on that later. She returned to the role in the sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in 2024.
-
Home Alone (1990). Her portrayal of Kevin’s mother brought her worldwide fame. “It’s a perfect movie, isn’t it?” she later recalled.
-
The queen of mockumentary. In the 1990s and 2000s, O’Hara became Christopher Guest’s muse in films like Best in Show and A Mighty Wind.
-
A triumphant comeback with Schitt’s Creek. In 2015, the role of Moira Rose gave Catherine O’Hara a second peak of stardom. Her unforgettable accent, collection of wigs, and extravagant costumes turned Moira into an internet phenomenon. For this role, in 2020, O’Hara achieved a “grand slam” of awards: an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Her final roles included appearances in the action film Argylle, the second season of The Last of Us, and the first season of The Studio.
Friends often said that Catherine O’Hara was an actress who never agreed to bad projects, because she valued quality and a sense of humor above all else.
Catherine O’Hara’s personal life also deserves special mention. In 1992, she married Bo Welch, the production designer of the original Beetlejuice. Together they had two sons, Matthew and Luke.

“People always say, ‘Communicate,’ right? ‘Tell your partner how you feel.’ We communicate a lot through jokes,” Catherine told PEOPLE magazine in 2024. “We joke about each other instead of yelling at each other. Sarcasm helps!”
The actress’s husband and children have not yet commented on her passing.
