Harvard University astrophysicist Avi Loeb has put forward a provocative theory suggesting that the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, currently moving toward Earth, could potentially be an alien spacecraft rather than a natural object.
According to Loeb, his hypothesis is based on the comet’s “extraordinarily rare and unusual trajectory,” which sets it apart from typical interstellar visitors. He noted that the object’s path does not fully align with what scientists usually expect from naturally occurring comets, prompting deeper questions about its true origin. Loeb has stated that 3I/ATLAS could approach Earth between November 21 and December 5, 2025, a timeframe that has already drawn significant attention within the scientific community.

The astrophysicist emphasized that while such a scenario remains speculative, it cannot be entirely dismissed. He suggested that if the object were indeed artificial in nature, it could be carrying scientific probes, surveillance instruments, or even weaponry. “It could come to help us or to harm us,” Loeb warned, adding that humanity should be prepared for both possibilities, however unlikely they may seem.

Loeb is well known for challenging conventional interpretations of interstellar objects, having previously raised similar questions about other mysterious visitors from deep space. His views often spark debate, dividing scientists between those who see value in exploring unconventional explanations and those who urge caution and emphasize natural astrophysical processes.

It is important to note that comet 3I/ATLAS was officially discovered by NASA on July 1, 2025. Astronomical models indicate that in late October, the object will make its closest approach to the Sun, coming within approximately 1.4 astronomical units. After this point, scientists believe it will continue on its trajectory and exit the Solar System, never to return.
While most researchers currently consider 3I/ATLAS to be a natural interstellar comet, Loeb’s remarks have reignited public fascination with the possibility of extraterrestrial technology and humanity’s readiness for contact. Whether cosmic curiosity or pure speculation, the discussion highlights how much remains unknown about the vast universe beyond our planet.
