The death of child star Heather O’Rourke, known for her role as Carol Anne Freeling in the iconic horror franchise Poltergeist, has once again captured global media attention.
A publication has revealed stunning medical details uncovered in her autopsy, shedding new light on the tragedy that occurred 37 years ago.
Heather O’Rourke was only 12 years old when her life ended unexpectedly on the operating table in 1988. Her parents believed she was completely healthy, although during the filming of the franchise’s third installment she began to show troubling, flu-like symptoms.

A year earlier, doctors had suspected Crohn’s disease—an inflammatory bowel condition. Although her symptoms eased for a while, they returned during the filming of Poltergeist III, this time far more severe.
Just before being hospitalized, Heather went into cardiac arrest but was resuscitated. Surgeons began operating, suspecting an intestinal blockage, but she died later that same day. At the time, her manager described the tragedy as a horrifying accident:
“It’s terrifying. On Saturday she was perfectly healthy, on Sunday they thought it was the flu, and on Monday she was gone.”
A fresh review of her death certificate revealed O’Rourke’s full diagnosis: intestinal stenosis—a severe blockage likely present from birth—and a suspected case of septic shock. A hospital spokesperson described the case as “highly unusual,” explaining that the blockage caused an infection, which then led to septic shock, ultimately resulting in complete cardiac and respiratory failure.
Heather’s tragic death further fueled the sinister reputation of the Poltergeist franchise, long rumored to be haunted by a “Hollywood curse” due to a string of cast deaths.

-
Dominique Dunne (who played Dana Freeling in the first film) was murdered in the same year the movie premiered (1982).
-
Lou Perryman (Pugsley) was killed in 1992.
But it was O’Rourke’s death—she was the face of the franchise—that struck the deepest chord, remaining one of the most chilling tragedies associated with Poltergeist to this day.
