I saw something strange lying on my floor at home, and I couldn’t even understand what I was looking at. It was completely still, like a tiny piece of a bright-green plant, maybe a broken bit of some house vine… or perhaps a small toy that had fallen off the table. 🤔
I stood over it, trying to figure out what it could possibly be. The shape was too perfect, the color far too vivid, and those “little horns” on the sides looked almost plastic.
But as soon as I leaned a little closer, the “thing” suddenly twitched. 😲 I froze. And then it moved sharply and began to crawl.
I nearly screamed from fear. The creature looked so bizarre it could have come straight out of a sci-fi movie about aliens. 😲
I saw something strange on my floor and wanted to touch it, but then it suddenly started moving — and I was horrified when I realized what it was.
It slowly crawled across the floor, and dark spines stuck out of its body — long, thin, almost as if it were warning me: “Don’t touch me.”
When I found out what it really was, I was terrified — and thankfully, nothing happened to me. 😱

Later I learned that it was a saddleback caterpillar. And that I was incredibly lucky: if I had picked it up with my hand, like I almost did, things could have ended very badly.
Its spines contain venom that gets injected into the skin at the slightest touch. People experience sharp pain, redness, swelling, blisters, and sometimes even dizziness, nausea, and numbness.

Many people end up going to the hospital after contact, because the pain is so intense it’s impossible to endure. I sat reading all this, feeling chills run down my back.
Just one wrong move — and I could’ve ended up with a swollen hand.

What should you do if you touch one by accident?
First, carefully remove the spines with sticky tape.
Then wash the area with soap and water, apply ice, and if the reaction is strong, take an antihistamine and seek medical help.

I gently swept the caterpillar into a jar with a broom and took it far out into the garden. Let it live — just not in my house.
Since then, whenever I see something unusual on the floor, I think twice before touching it.
