A Quest for Beauty That Changed Everything: Hang Mioku’s Heartbreaking Story. (Before/After Photos)

South Korean singer Hang Mioku was once admired for both her voice and striking looks, but her relentless pursuit of perfection turned into a tragic downfall. Hoping to hold on to her youth, she began receiving professional silicone injections to smooth and preserve her face. For a time, doctors complied—but as her features grew unnaturally swollen, most refused to continue. Still, Hang would not stop.

Desperate, she began injecting herself at home, replacing silicone with ordinary vegetable oil, believing it would achieve the same results. The consequences were devastating: her face swelled grotesquely, causing alarm and fear. Yet, driven by envy and the belief that she had to be flawless, she sought out doctors in Japan who agreed to continue the procedures. Hang later confessed that she “couldn’t stand people who were more beautiful” than her.

When she eventually returned to South Korea, her own family could barely recognize her. Her once delicate features had expanded into an enormous, bluish mask, though Hang insisted she still looked attractive. Denied further medical help, she again turned to self-injections, worsening the disfigurement. Eventually, she realized that she was battling a severe mental disorder, hearing voices that compelled her to keep injecting her face.

Admitting herself to a clinic, Hang finally began treatment. Though she survived the disorder, her face was permanently damaged. With no money for reconstructive surgery, she went on a reality TV show, where compassionate viewers raised funds for her operations. Over time, surgeons performed ten procedures, removing large amounts of silicone and oil from her face and neck. While her appearance could never be fully restored, the operations eased her suffering and allowed her to regain basic functions—like closing her mouth.

Now at 58, Hang Mioku lives as a powerful cautionary tale. She appears on television not for her singing, but to warn others about the dangers of excessive cosmetic surgery. Though her beauty was permanently altered, she has regained her health and uses her story to help prevent others from falling victim to the same dangerous obsession.
