Mariam Nabatanzi from Uganda has lived an extraordinary life marked by both hardship and resilience. Forced into marriage at just 12 to a man much older than her, she became a mother of twins by the age of 13. A rare medical condition known as hyper-ovulation—where multiple eggs are released during one cycle—meant that Mariam went on to have numerous multiple births, including twins, triplets, and even quadruplets. By the time she was 36, she had given birth to an incredible 44 children, far beyond the six she had once dreamed of having.

Her challenges deepened when her husband abandoned the family after the birth of her last set of twins, leaving Mariam to care for all 44 children alone. Determined to provide for them, she works tirelessly at three different jobs: cutting hair, decorating events, and collecting and selling scrap metal. She also produces gin and herbal remedies, with nearly all of her income going toward feeding, clothing, schooling, and caring for her children.

Education is especially important to Mariam. Though resources are limited, she does everything possible to keep her children in school and proudly displays photos of those who have graduated on her walls. Still, the sheer responsibility sometimes forces painful compromises, like pulling an older child from school temporarily to help the family survive.

The family resides in four modest cement-brick houses with metal roofs. With little space, they must stay organized—sharing chores like cooking, cleaning, and laundry. Sleeping arrangements range from bunks to mattresses on the floor. Despite their struggles, the family’s teamwork and unity shine, inspired by a motto written on their wall: “On Saturday, we all work together.”
Through it all, Mariam’s devotion to her children is unwavering. Her greatest wish is not wealth or luxury, but simply that her sons and daughters find happiness and stability—the things she was denied in her own childhood. Her story is both heartbreaking and inspiring, a powerful example of a mother’s sacrifice, strength, and unshakable love.
