It all started a few weeks ago. The man, an engineer, began complaining of a dull, persistent pain in his neck. He chalked it up to chronic fatigue, work stress, and lack of sleep. In the evenings, he applied warm compresses, gave himself massages, and took painkillers—but nothing helped. The pain didn’t subside; it grew sharper.
His wife noticed he had become irritable, less talkative, and was sleeping poorly. At first, she thought it was simply burnout. But one morning, when he got out of bed, she saw a strange swelling on his neck. It was firm, rounded, and painfully sensitive to touch. Panic gripped her, but she tried to stay calm so as not to frighten him prematurely.
The next day, he looked even worse: his face was pale, dark circles appeared under his eyes, and he complained of nausea and digestive problems. The wife could no longer wait—she insisted on a doctor’s visit. When the doctors examined him, they were shocked to discover the cause of all his symptoms.
They were soon referred for an ultrasound and blood tests.
When they returned to the clinic for the results, a heavy silence filled the doctor’s office. The doctor looked at them solemnly and delivered the diagnosis—medullary thyroid carcinoma.
This rare and insidious type of cancer develops rapidly and often goes unnoticed.
They were told that the tumor had already reached a stage requiring urgent surgery, followed by intensive and prolonged treatment. The word “cancer” hung in the air like a verdict. Both struggled to hold back tears.
The man faced surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. But the harshest blow came later: doctors informed him that, due to the nature of his treatment, the chances of fathering a child would be almost zero.
This news shattered the last remnants of peace in their home. Their dreams of a second child, which had seemed so real, suddenly crumbled to dust.
Since then, every day has been a struggle—for health, for hope, for a future that will never be the same.
