The couple called the police early in the morning, just as dawn was breaking. The woman’s voice trembled as she tried to explain to the dispatcher that something was “living” in their sofa.
— “It’s moving… and scratching,” she insisted. “At first, we thought it was noise from outside, but the sounds are coming straight from the sofa!”
The officer decided to respond to the call with a K-9 unit, just in case there really was something there.
When they entered the living room, the couple was already on edge: the man in a wheelchair held his wife’s hand, and she looked as if she might scream at any moment. A tense silence filled the room.
The dog froze near the sofa, the hair on its neck standing on end, and then it growled. In the next second, with a loud bark, it lunged at the cushions, burying its nose into the fabric. The owners gasped, and the officer frowned:
— “There’s something there. And it’s clearly not nothing.”
The dog scratched the upholstery with its paws, squealing with excitement, as if trying to reach an invisible enemy.
The officer pulled out a knife and carefully cut into the side of the sofa. At first, dust and old batting spilled out, then a sharp, piercing squeak was heard.
— “Oh my God!” — exclaimed the woman, covering her mouth with her hand.

From the tear, several gray bodies slipped out at once. They were rats — enormous, with shiny eyes. They scurried across the floor, and the dog lunged after them fiercely.
But the worst part was inside. When the officer cut further into the upholstery, everyone saw that the sofa contained a real nest.
It teemed with a whole family — dozens of rats, including newborns, tangled gray bodies wriggling and squeaking.
— “How did they get in there?..” — whispered the man in the wheelchair, turning pale.
The dog barked and tried to seize the rats, but the officer pulled it back. Even he, who had seen a lot in his career, was stunned by the scale of it. A sofa where the family had sat for years, watched TV, and entertained guests, had turned into a living nightmare.
The woman couldn’t take it — her hands shook, and she nearly screamed:
— “We’ve been sitting ON THIS?!”
The officer nodded seriously:
— “Yes. But now we’ll take care of it. Your home is no longer a place for them.”
Only then did the couple realize that the strange noises they had been hearing for weeks were not their imagination.
