Latvian entrepreneur Aivars Zvirbulis purchased 3,000 hectares (around 7,400 acres) of forested hills and created Amatciems, or the “City of the Sun,” a village designed to blend modern living with harmony in nature 🌞🌿.
Amatciems features 300 eco-friendly homes, each on its own private plot of 0.4–1.3 hectares, often including a small lake and surrounding woodland 🌊🌳. Houses come with all modern comforts: central sewage systems carefully installed to protect ancient roots, high-speed internet, electricity, and geothermal heating that taps deep underground to keep homes cozy year-round 🔌🔥. Fireplaces are reserved only for the coldest winter days.

Zvirbulis explains, “The idea came from wanting a home by the water, surrounded by forest. Initially, I built it for myself—but now it’s a community of family, friends, and like-minded neighbors who value nature and each other.”

“My goal is to maintain nature’s balance,” Zvirbulis says. “We keep wildflower meadows next to manicured lawns. On summer nights, fireflies light up the grass, ponds echo with frog songs, and fallen trees become homes for woodpeckers, squirrels, and foxes 🦊🐦.”
