I Thought It Was Just Noises… But the Well Held a Tragedy Beyond Words

My wife said she was hearing strange noises coming from our old well 😨😨. I grabbed a flashlight, went to check—and what I saw inside froze my blood.

Recently, my wife, our young son, and I bought a small house in the countryside, hoping to spend summers away from the city rush. It seemed perfect—quiet, spacious yard, fresh air.

The former owner warned us: “There’s an old well in the yard. It hasn’t worked for many years. If you want, you can fill it in and tear down the cover.” I didn’t think much of it. What could possibly be scary about an old, abandoned well?

For a few days, everything was peaceful—until something horrifying happened.

I was sitting in the room reading a book. My wife was nearby, and our son was playing in his room. It was a hot day, so we decided to stay inside. Suddenly, my wife rushed in, her eyes full of fear:

“From the well…” she gasped, grabbing my hand. “There are sounds coming from the well!”

I looked at her in confusion.

“What are you talking about? You must have imagined it. Maybe it was the wind or some birds.”

She shook her head, clutching my hand tighter.

“No. I heard it clearly. Please, let’s go. I’m scared.”

I got up, still doubting. The well was old and sealed. What could be inside?

We went into the yard. I stared at the well—silence.

“See?” I said, trying to calm her. “It’s quiet. Nothing.”

But my wife pressed her hands to her chest and whispered:

“You don’t understand… I heard a voice. There’s something down there!”

I walked closer. The boards on the lid were cracked, grass grew around the edges, the chain hung loosely. I leaned over, but saw only darkness. No sound.

“See? Empty. Maybe the noise came from the fields or the road,” I muttered, though unease crept into me.

Her voice trembled:

“No. It wasn’t the wind. Please, get the flashlight. I feel sick even thinking something’s inside…”

I sighed and nodded.

“Alright. Let’s check, so you’ll feel better.”

She hurried inside, returned with my flashlight. As she handed it to me, I noticed her hands were shaking. I took it, leaned over the edge, and shone the beam into the darkness… And then I saw something terrifying.

At the bottom, against the damp stones, was our son.

While I was reading and my wife was busy, he had quietly slipped outside. Curious about the well, he must have leaned too far—and fallen in.

For nearly an hour he had been crying for help, but the depth muffled his voice. We thought he was safe in his room. It was a miracle he was still alive.

I immediately called 911. Rescuers arrived and pulled him out. He’s now in the hospital, recovering.

We sold the house. And now I just want to say this: please, always watch your children. Even something that seems harmless can become the cause of a real tragedy.
