By the age of six, Robert Pershing Wadlow had already reached 1.7 meters — the height of an adult man. By 16, he had grown to an incredible 2.44 meters.
Despite his towering stature, his family members were all of average height, and nothing in his early childhood hinted at such an extraordinary future.
Robert had a rare condition called pituitary gigantism, where his pituitary gland produced an excessive amount of growth hormone.
Today, such conditions can be treated medically, but in the early 20th century, no effective treatments existed. Wadlow’s body continued growing throughout his life.
Despite physical challenges and constant public attention, Robert remained kind-hearted, friendly, and had a great sense of humor. He understood the fascination people had with him but never showed anger toward those who laughed.

His height put tremendous strain on his body, especially his legs. He had to wear a heavy metal brace to support his lower body. This brace caused painful blisters, which Robert barely felt due to a lack of sensation in his feet. He always had someone close by to check his legs for injuries.
However, during one trip between cities, this helper was not present. An unnoticed blister became infected, leading to sepsis.
About a week later, Robert Wadlow passed away from sepsis accompanied by a high fever. He was only 22 years old.
