I noticed a dog sitting alone in the middle of a store with a leash but no owner in sight. I wanted to take her home, but then the store manager came over and told me a terrible truth 😱😱
I had just gone into a grocery store for some usual errands—bread, milk, something for tea. Everything was as normal. I was walking past the aisles, hearing the cart wheels squeak as they turned and listening to someone discussing discounts somewhere in the distance. I reached the household goods section where I needed batteries for the remote.
And then I stopped.
Right by the shelves with tools, between boxes and light bulbs, there was a dog sitting. Just sitting, motionless, as if she was part of the decor. The leash lay on the floor, as if it had just been let go. But there was no one around. No owner, no sign anyone had hurried away.
I froze, expecting someone to come running, call her name, apologize. But nothing happened. The dog sat calmly, looking straight at me. She wasn’t shaking or whining. She was just… waiting. It was both the eeriest and most touching thing.

I couldn’t just walk past. She had a collar—so she had a home, an owner. I looked around, walked through the nearby aisles, asked the staff, but no one knew anything. No one had seen her before. No one knew how she got there.
I was almost ready to decide—take her with me. Leaving her there was impossible. My mind raced—where would she sleep, what would she eat?
Then the store manager came over. He stopped beside me and quietly said something that left me in shock, and I stood frozen for about ten minutes.
“Oh, excuse me, is she with you? That’s Richie. His owner fell ill right here, in the aisle between the shelves. A few hours ago. We called an ambulance, and they took him to the hospital. But the dog stayed. He always came with her. Always held the leash in his hand. But when they carried him out on a stretcher… he let go. The poor animal didn’t know where to go. So he just sits there, waiting.”

I felt like something inside me broke. Richie was left behind. Alone. Without commands or explanations. But he didn’t leave. He stayed right there, where he last saw the one person who meant the whole world to him.
How much time had passed? How many shoppers walked by without noticing? And he just kept waiting.

I offered the manager to take the dog home until the owner returns, and I left my address and phone number.
If only everyone in this world were as loyal as this dog.
