Sally Struthers rose to fame in the 1970s with her breakout role as Gloria Stivic on the revolutionary sitcom All in the Family. While the show often focused on the bold views of Archie Bunker, Struthers shined as his daughter, evolving from a wide-eyed young woman into a thoughtful and independent character—earning her two Emmy Awards. Her success on the show led to appearances in Archie Bunker’s Place and the short-lived spin-off Gloria. A new generation later came to know and love her as Babette on Gilmore Girls.

Struthers was also a committed humanitarian. She became well-known for her advocacy with ChildFund, appearing in emotionally charged commercials in the 1990s and 2000s to help children in need. However, her efforts weren’t always met with kindness. She eventually parted ways with the organization after a harrowing experience in Uganda, where she and her crew were mistaken for kidnappers by armed rebels. On Marc Maron’s podcast, she recalled the terrifying moment and said it led her to rethink everything: “If something happened to me, my daughter would be alone.” Public ridicule also played a role in her decision to step away, as she expressed disappointment in being mocked for trying to help: “I couldn’t believe that doing good made me a joke.”
Now in her seventies, Struthers continues to appear on screen and on stage. In July 2023, she was featured on Australia’s Studio 10, where she reminisced about a hilarious 1975 interview with satirical comedian Norman Gunston. The moment, which left her in tears of laughter, remains a fan favorite. At 76, viewers praised her vibrant and healthy appearance.
Off-screen, Struthers married psychiatrist William Rader, though the marriage ended in 1983. Motherhood, she admitted, wasn’t something she had envisioned early on—but after her daughter Samantha was born, she never felt the need for more children. Samantha followed her father’s path and now runs her own psychology practice, Source Code.
