Carlo Ponti Jr., the eldest son of the legendary Italian actress, has tied the knot for the second time. Four years ago, he fell in love with Mariam Sharmanashvili, a woman 20 years his junior from Georgia, and even converted religions for her.
Carlo proposed last year, but the couple only just celebrated their wedding in Georgia. The bride opted for a classic ivory wedding gown with long sleeves and a flowing train, paired with a delicate veil.
The groom wore a stylish suit topped with a traditional Georgian-style hooded cloak. The couple wed in a monastery in Mtskheta, which was closed to the public for 40 minutes for the private ceremony.
Mariam, who already has a school-aged son, captured Carlo’s heart after his first marriage to a Hungarian violinist ended in divorce. He has two children from that previous union.
Despite the age gap, Sophia Loren warmly accepted her new daughter-in-law, who also attended the actress’s 90th birthday celebration. Loren and her late husband, Carlo Ponti Sr., had two sons — Carlo Jr. and Edoardo, born four years apart.
