On July 22, the British royal family celebrates the birthday of Prince William’s firstborn. Prince George, who is second in line to the throne, has turned 12. To mark the special occasion, Kensington Palace released a new photo of the young royal.

In the image, George is seen leaning against a wooden fence, wearing a white and blue checkered shirt with rolled-up sleeves and a green fleece vest. The portrait was taken by photographer Josh Shinner. Interestingly, Prince George and his siblings were previously often photographed by Kate Middleton herself. However, since her cancer diagnosis, she has paused her photography hobby.

It’s also being reported online that a strict royal rule comes into effect for George now that he’s 12. From this point forward, he is not allowed to fly on the same plane as his father. This precaution is taken to ensure that, in the event of a plane crash, the monarchy does not lose two heirs at once. This “tradition” dates back to Prince William’s own childhood, when he too was forbidden from traveling with his father, Charles, on the same aircraft.
