In a remarkable display of medical skill and teamwork, doctors at the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) successfully carried out a rare and complex surgery that saved both a mother and her unborn child, drawing praise from across the medical community.
The 32-year-old expectant mother, who was in her third trimester, was rushed to the HSA with severe abdominal pain and signs of distress, initially suspected to be complications related to her pregnancy. However, after swift diagnostics and imaging, doctors discovered a ruptured uterine artery aneurysm — a rare and potentially fatal condition for both mother and child.
A multi-disciplinary team of obstetricians, vascular surgeons, and neonatologists was quickly assembled. Knowing that time was critical, the team decided to perform an emergency cesarean section and vascular repair surgery simultaneously — a procedure rarely attempted due to the risks involved.

Thanks to the meticulous coordination and precision of the HSA surgical team, the baby was safely delivered, and the mother’s internal bleeding was brought under control. Both patients are now in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
“This was one of the most high-risk cases we’ve encountered,” said Dr. Anjali Ramdas, lead obstetrician on the case. “Without immediate surgical intervention, we could have lost both mother and child. It’s a testament to the importance of teamwork, rapid diagnostics, and advanced medical care.”
The newborn, a healthy baby boy weighing 2.9 kg, is currently being monitored in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) but is breathing on his own and showing strong signs of recovery.
The mother, who wished to remain unnamed, expressed overwhelming gratitude to the hospital staff. “They not only saved my life but gave my son a chance to live,” she said through tears. “I will never be able to thank them enough.”

This rare success story underscores the life-saving potential of early diagnosis and advanced surgical intervention, particularly in maternal-fetal emergencies. HSA is now sharing its surgical notes and findings with other medical institutions to help improve outcomes in similarly rare cases.
💙 A true miracle of modern medicine — and a beautiful reminder of the lives that can be saved when experience, technology, and compassion come together.
