In 1975, at the peak of their careers, actress Goldie Hawn and a well-known musician from The Hudson Brothers unexpectedly met on a flight from New York to Los Angeles. The connection was immediate.
The musician, who had performed alongside major acts like The Beach Boys and The Monkees and had some acting experience, was captivated by Goldie’s charm. By that evening, he had already asked her out to dinner. He later revealed that their chemistry was undeniable, and their physical attraction quickly ignited their relationship.

They married in 1976, just as they were expecting their first child. However, joy turned to fear when their newborn son suffered from meconium aspiration, a serious birth complication. After several tense days in intensive care, their son miraculously recovered, becoming a symbol of hope for the couple.
Three years later, their daughter was born, and for a time, the family thrived. But by 1981, trouble arose when the musician discovered Goldie had been unfaithful. She confessed that she didn’t believe in traditional monogamy and preferred an open relationship—something he couldn’t accept. “I wanted a traditional marriage,” he later admitted, “but she wasn’t interested.”

They separated, and in 1983, Goldie began dating actor Kurt Russell. Although they had met years earlier, their romance blossomed later. By 1986, they had a son, Wyatt.
Blending their families wasn’t easy. Goldie’s daughter recalled feeling confused about how Kurt’s son fit into the family dynamic. It was a lot for a child to understand.

After the divorce, Goldie’s children from her first marriage felt increasingly abandoned by their biological father, who gradually withdrew from their lives. When the children were young, Kurt Russell stepped in as a father figure, a role for which they remain deeply grateful.
Both Oliver and Kate Hudson openly acknowledge Kurt as their true dad, which has sparked tension with their biological father, Bill Hudson. Bill accuses Goldie of alienating the children from him and claims he was unfairly pushed aside.

Tensions boiled over in 2015 when Oliver posted a childhood photo of himself, Kate, and Bill on Instagram, captioned “Happy abandonment day.” Bill was outraged, calling the post hurtful and subsequently removed all reminders of the children from his home, even stating he no longer considered them his kids.
Kate echoed her brother’s feelings by publicly dedicating Father’s Day tributes to Kurt rather than Bill. In response, Bill demanded that they stop using his last name, declaring, “They’re no longer part of my life.”
Despite the family drama, Kurt has embraced his role as a grandfather to Kate and Oliver’s children. While Bill holds onto bitterness, Kate and Oliver have chosen to focus on their loving relationship with Kurt and move forward from the past.
