LaWanda Page was a celebrated American actress and comedian, best remembered for her iconic role as the outspoken and witty Aunt Esther on the hit sitcom Sanford and Son. Born on October 19, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, she discovered her love for the stage early on. Her entertainment career began with dancing and eventually led to stand-up comedy, where her bold and often risqué humor earned her the title “The Queen of Comedy.”

Her career took a major leap forward thanks to her childhood friend, comedian Redd Foxx, who championed her casting as Aunt Esther. Although the show’s producers were initially reluctant, Foxx stood his ground, even threatening to quit the show unless she was hired. Her portrayal of the no-nonsense, Bible-wielding Aunt Esther, who frequently sparred with Fred Sanford in hilarious confrontations, became a standout element of the show and made her a fan favorite.

After her success on Sanford and Son, Page remained active in the entertainment industry, reprising her role in spin-offs like Sanford Arms and Sanford, and guest-starring in shows like 227 and Diff’rent Strokes. She also appeared in movies, including Friday (1995), and released a series of comedy albums featuring her signature no-holds-barred humor.

While her TV persona was brash and fiery, those who knew her off-screen described her as warm and generous. Throughout her long career, she broke ground for future generations of Black comedians, especially women, leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, authenticity, and comedic brilliance.

LaWanda Page passed away on September 14, 2002, at 81 years old. Her influence on comedy and television endures, and her unforgettable performance as Aunt Esther continues to bring laughter to new audiences today. Her fearless voice and trailblazing talent secured her a permanent place in entertainment history.
