Reviving the Past: How One Woman Brought an Antique Chair Back to Life
Restoring antique furniture isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about preserving history and giving a treasured item a meaningful new chapter. That’s exactly what Elena set out to do when she came across a beautiful but badly worn chair and decided to restore it with care and respect for its origins.
Elena’s Story:
One winter holiday, Elena happened to pass a flea market and spotted an old chair that immediately stood out to her. Priced at just 1,500 rubles, the chair came with a fascinating past. Elena, though new to antique restoration, made it her mission to restore the chair using traditional materials while preserving as much of its original charm as possible.
The process began with removing the old finish and carefully extracting hundreds of handmade nails. Structural issues became apparent, so she reinforced the joints with the help of her husband, whose woodworking skills were a key asset.
Instead of using a modern varnish, Elena opted for clear restoration oil to enhance the natural wood without masking its age. Her fabric choice was subtle—complementing the piece rather than overpowering it.
The most demanding part was rebuilding the support system. Together, she and her husband replaced the jute webbing, secured the aged springs, and hand-tied each one. The front legs, previously shortened, were extended to their original length. She then restuffed the seat with sea grass, sourcing materials online to stay true to the period.
