A bottlenose dolphin in distress approached a diver off the coast of Hawaii, seeking help after becoming entangled in a fishing line.
The incredible encounter was captured on video, showing diver Kelly Laros carefully freeing the intelligent animal in a rescue effort that lasted about eight minutes.
Laros had been leading a diving tour when he heard unusual squeaking sounds underwater. Turning to investigate, he saw the dolphin struggling and immediately realized it needed help.
“The way it swam up to me and positioned itself—there was no doubt it was asking for assistance,” Laros explained.
Upon closer inspection, he noticed a fishing hook embedded in the dolphin’s fin, with the line tightly wrapped around its body, preventing it from moving freely.
“I was able to remove the hook from its mouth, but the line around its pectoral fin was deeply embedded, and the dolphin had injuries on both the front and left side,” he said. “I was afraid that pulling too hard might cause more harm, so I took my time and carefully cut the line to set it free.”
Laros, who has had many encounters with bottlenose dolphins, added, “They are incredibly intelligent creatures—it’s no surprise this one came to humans for help.”
