A Little Girl’s Unexpected Friendship with a Bumblebee That Never Leaves Her Side

Sometimes, the smallest act of kindness can spark the most unexpected bond. That’s exactly what happened when a young girl in the UK helped an injured bumblebee — and ended up with a tiny winged best friend.

Lacey Shillinglaw was out walking her dog when she almost stepped on a struggling insect right in the middle of the sidewalk. Curious, she looked closer and saw a bumblebee with a damaged wing that clearly couldn’t fly. To protect it from being crushed by passersby, she gently let the bee climb onto her hand and carried it to some nearby flowers.

She tried placing the bee on a flower to rest, but it showed no interest and clung tightly to her hand instead. After a few minutes, Lacey gave in and brought her new friend home.

She named the bee Betty, and to everyone’s surprise, the little insect quickly settled in at the house. Lacey’s family welcomed their unusual guest, and within days Betty had won over everyone with her charm.

Though the windows were left open, Betty never tried to fly away. Instead, she preferred spending time perched on Lacey’s shoulder, nestled in her hair, or even riding on her sunglasses during their walks. Strangers often did a double take when they saw the girl strolling with a bumblebee in her hair.

Betty dined alongside Lacey at the table, although their meals differed — the family kept small dishes of honey, sugar water, and strawberry jam just for her. At night, she slept snugly in a jar and returned to Lacey each morning.

Even when taken outside to enjoy the garden, Betty never strayed far. She’d explore nearby flowers but buzzed right back whenever Lacey moved away, never wanting to be left behind.

Interestingly, Betty showed no interest in any family member except Lacey. She stayed close to the girl and avoided her parents, siblings, and even the dog. And despite living in a human home, Betty never once stung anyone.

Lacey cherishes their unique friendship, knowing it won’t last forever — bumblebees live only a few short weeks. But for now, she treasures every moment with her fluffy little companion.
