Albinism is an inherited condition that affects approximately one in every 20,000 individuals in Europe and North America. People with this genetic disorder typically have very light skin, hair, and eyes. In the past, they were often viewed as different and subjected to harsh treatment.
Today, albinos are generally accepted and treated normally, but this is mostly true in more developed and socially progressive nations.
In contrast, some areas of Africa remain dangerous for people with albinism. Traditional healers and shamans in these regions believe that the body parts of albinos possess magical powers.
As a result, some individuals resort to brutal violence, including murder, to obtain what they believe are potent ingredients for traditional medicine. The following photos highlight the harsh reality albinos face, living amid fear, prejudice, and violence.
