A surfer’s favorite from Hawaii — a French Bulldog named Dale — has unexpectedly become a movie star. He made his debut in Disney’s new live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, which has already earned over $145 million at the box office.
The six-year-old French Bulldog from Honolulu first stepped in front of the camera while filming a scene for Lilo & Stitch. In the shot, Dale confidently stands on a surfboard, inspiring the character Stitch to give wave-riding a try.

Dale’s owners, Greg Dutcher and Julie Eggers, shared that their pup has been skateboarding since he was a puppy, and later mastered paddleboarding (SUP). For the film, Dale stood on a surfboard for the first time — and loved it so much that he now jumps onto boards with other surfers whenever someone tries to pull him out of the water.

It all started with a spontaneous Instagram casting call looking for a water-loving French Bulldog unafraid of swimming. Dale was brought in for an audition, and trainer J. Tyler London was immediately impressed — the fearless pup nailed his balance on the board on the very first try.

After the film’s release on YouTube, Julie kept checking for updates, eager to spot Dale on screen. And when beachgoers in Honolulu began recognizing the four-legged actor, it became clear: Dale had gained a fanbase of his own. As his owners joke, even Dale’s sister being named Lilo feels like a sign — this role was meant for him.
