Hugo was a successful businessman in his fifties, a wealthy widower with a growing belly and a balding head. Despite his age and appearance, he fancied himself irresistible, especially to the younger women who worked under him.
Though he didn’t openly flirt all the time, Hugo couldn’t resist dropping inappropriate comments and making awkward advances whenever he saw an opportunity — often directed at his waitstaff.
A few weeks earlier, 22-year-old Alina had been hired as a dishwasher. Her life had been anything but easy. She lost her partner Elias in a tragic accident while she was pregnant. With no family to turn to, she took the restaurant job to support herself and her infant daughter.
One day, Alina saw a “Now Hiring” sign in Hugo’s restaurant window. Desperate, she walked in and asked for a job. Her shy smile caught Hugo’s attention, and he hired her on the spot.
But it didn’t take long before coworkers warned her.

“Watch yourself with the boss,” one of the waitresses whispered. “He loves acting like a Romeo. He’s already tried his luck with some of the others.”
Alina, though, had one goal: survival.
“Don’t worry,” she replied. “I can handle myself.”
One evening as she prepared to leave, Hugo approached her holding a rose.
“Do you know why I really hired you?” he asked with a sly smile.
“I’m in a hurry, sir.”
“Call me Hugo,” he said. “How about a luxury weekend at a spa? All expenses paid. Massages, champagne, shopping…”
Stunned, Alina responded firmly.
“I’m here to work. Thank you, but I’m not interested.”
Hugo was bruised by the rejection. His ego couldn’t comprehend being turned down — especially by someone he viewed as “just a dishwasher.”
She’ll change her mind. She has to see how generous I am, he thought bitterly.
In the days that followed, Hugo kept a watchful eye on her. He became especially curious about the large bag she often carried and her frequent visits to the locker room.
Then, one busy afternoon, Alina said she needed to leave early to run an errand.
That’s when Hugo snapped.

“Stop! What’s in the bag? Are you stealing food? Wine?”
The restaurant fell silent. Alina turned pale.
“Just my lunch and some clothes,” she whispered.
But Hugo yanked the bag from her and slammed it onto a table. As he unzipped it, the room froze.
Inside, nestled under a blanket, was Alina’s sleeping six-month-old baby.
The infant stirred and softly murmured, “Ma…ma…”
The silence was deafening. Alina began to sob.
“I’m sorry… I have no one. I can’t afford daycare, so I bring her here and hide her during shifts. I feed her during breaks. I wasn’t stealing… I just needed to work and care for her.”
Hugo’s expression crumbled. The sight of the baby, the desperation in Alina’s voice — it all hit him hard. Memories of his own wife and child, both lost in a tragic car accident, overwhelmed him.
He broke down in front of everyone.
“Forgive me… I acted out of pride and anger. I’ve been hiding behind my wealth since I lost my family. But I was wrong.”
Alina nodded through tears.

“I understand. But I didn’t deserve the public shame.”
Hugo handed her the bag gently and said:
“Take a month off — paid. Your job is safe. And when you return, you’ll have a raise to help cover childcare.”

With her baby held close, Alina left in tears — this time, of relief.
From that day forward, Hugo changed. He treated his staff with respect and never crossed the line again. He still stumbled at times, but his heart had softened.
As for love? He hadn’t found it again. But for the first time in years, he began to believe he might be worthy of it.
