Some dogs are naturally gifted when it comes to training, especially for demanding roles like service work—but Ryker, a playful German Shepherd, just wasn’t cut out for the job. Across the country, skilled trainers dedicate themselves to preparing dogs to support individuals with medical or developmental needs. When Ryker arrived at Double H Canine Training Academy in Louisville, Kentucky, the staff had high hopes. Known for their individualized approach, Double H believes that every dog has potential and tailors training to suit each personality. But service work requires more than basic obedience—it demands emotional intelligence, patience, and practical skills like opening doors or fetching items.
The first sign that Ryker might not be the right fit came when he was asked to fetch a water bottle. Instead of gently retrieving it, he bit into it with such enthusiasm that water spilled everywhere. Trainers tried to shift tactics, moving on to a new challenge.
Next up was practicing how to assist a person using a walker. Ryker was calm at first, sitting obediently beside the trainer. But once they started walking, Ryker was instantly distracted by the tennis balls attached to the walker’s legs—irresistible toys in his eyes. Instead of guiding, he lunged for them, much to the amusement of everyone watching.
Undeterred, the trainers attempted to teach him to open a refrigerator. Ryker was eager, but a bit too enthusiastic—nearly toppling the fridge in his excitement. He also tried helping with a wheelchair, but moved too fast and lost control. By this point, it was hard to tell if Ryker was training or just enjoying his own joyride.
Despite these comical missteps, one thing became clear: Ryker might not be destined for service work, but he shines in other ways. His boundless energy, lovable personality, and joyful spirit make him an ideal companion. While he may never be a certified service dog, Ryker will surely bring joy and laughter to any home lucky enough to welcome him.
