Rejection is never easy — especially when you’re left wondering if your appearance played a role. For 23-year-old Ash Putnam, that question turned into a viral moment after she was turned down for a job at TJ Maxx.
Ash, who proudly wears tattoos and facial piercings, took to TikTok to share her frustration over not landing an entry-level position. Her candid post struck a chord, racking up over 7 million views and thousands of comments. While the company cited “more experienced candidates” as the reason, many viewers speculated that Ash’s look may have influenced the decision.
Refusing to stay silent, Ash returned to the store to get clarity. “I asked if it had anything to do with my tattoos,” she explained. “They said no — but honestly, I don’t buy it.”
In her video, she voiced what many were thinking: “Tattoos don’t reflect work ethic. Some of the most driven, brilliant people I know have body art and piercings. That shouldn’t disqualify anyone.”

Currently working as an Uber Eats driver, Ash believes her tattoos — not her résumé — led to the rejection. TikTok users were quick to agree, with some claiming insider knowledge. One commenter who said they worked in HR added, “TJ Maxx doesn’t want employees with visible tattoos representing them.”
Ash has heard it all — from people calling her “demonic” to cruel suggestions that she “belongs in a Halloween store.” But she refuses to let the negativity define her. “Tattoos are art. They’re self-expression — not a reflection of professionalism,” she said.

She’s now calling on employers to shift their mindset. “It’s 2024. Piercings, dyed hair, tattoos — these don’t affect someone’s ability to do a job. It’s time we stop judging people for being different and start seeing their value.”
Her story has sparked an important conversation: Should appearance still play a role in hiring? Or is it time to leave those outdated ideas behind?
