Known as “the man in the iron lung” and “Polio Paul,” Alexander, a Dallas native, was defined by much more than his condition. To his younger brother Philip, Paul was a shining example of resilience and a true source of inspiration.
“He dreamed of changing the world,” Philip said. “He was determined to leave a mark that would last.”
Paul’s life changed for
Despite overwhelming challenges, Paul remained optimistic and uplifted those around him.
“He refused to let his disability limit him,” Philip shared. “He faced every obstacle head-on and found a way to adapt.”
Paul’s perseverance carried into his academic life as well. He earned a degree in economics from Southern Methodist University and later a law degree from the University of Texas. Remarkably, he passed the bar exam and went on to practice law in Dallas.
In March 2024, Paul made history when Guinness World Records officially recognized him as the longest-living iron lung survivor.
“He owed much of his strength to the tireless support of our parents and a circle of close friends,” Philip added.
Paul also embraced the digital age, using social media — especially TikTok — to share his message of resilience and hope, building a devoted global audience.
Even through his darkest moments, Paul’s spirit remained unbroken.
“I miss feeling the sun on my face,” he once said in a TikTok video, “but I keep holding on to hope because I believe better days are ahead.”
A GoFundMe campaign was organized to support him after he was exploited by previous caregivers, helping to fund his iron lung maintenance, housing, and medical care.
In his final weeks, Paul contracted COVID-19, a serious threat to his already fragile health. Yet even facing such odds, he remained full of gratitude and peace.
“The night before he passed, he looked at me and said, ‘This is perfect,'” Philip remembered.
Paul Alexander’s story is a lasting testament to human strength, compassion, and perseverance. As Philip tearfully reflected, his brother’s life reminds us all that kindness and determination can overcome even the greatest hardships.
