Heartwarming Rescue: Elephant Freed After Lifetime in Shackles Finally Rests

Though Grandma Somboon’s story begins with hardship, today it’s her inspiring rescue that shines. Taken from the wild as a baby, Somboon spent over 80 years in the tourism and logging industries, forced to perform, beg, and carry tourists for long hours—deprived of her freedom and separated from her young.

Her story reflects a harsh truth: tourist demand fuels the ongoing mistreatment of elephants. But in January, hope arrived.

The Save Elephant Foundation in Thailand stepped in with a mission to give Grandma Somboon the life she deserved. “It’s time for Grandma to be cared for and allowed to rest,” they shared.

At 87, Somboon was frail—malnourished, dehydrated, and with clouded eyes—when she was brought to her new home at Elephant Nature Park. Unlike many elephants who take weeks to adjust, Somboon lay down to rest almost immediately, as if knowing she was finally safe.

Having spent a lifetime standing on chained feet, unable to sleep properly, her peaceful slumber was a powerful symbol of freedom. It took effort for her to rise again, but she did—embracing her new life more quickly than anyone expected.

Now surrounded by care, soft bedding, fresh food, and water, Somboon continues to heal. Though she still requires daily attention, she’s making steady progress. Her strength and spirit are a testament to the resilience of elephants.

Somboon’s journey is a moving reminder of what these magnificent animals endure—and what’s possible when compassion steps in. At last, she can enjoy the dignity, peace, and freedom she was always meant to have.
