At just 44 years old, I found myself facing a diagnosis that no one should have to hear: bowel cancer. For years, I was living a perfectly normal life, healthy on the outside, enjoying all the foods I loved—especially one simple, comforting snack that many of us take for granted: the humble sandwich.
Now, as I look back, I wonder if my lifelong love for sandwiches might have played a role in this devastating diagnosis. It’s a question that may seem odd at first—after all, who would think that the food we enjoy so much could cause something as serious as cancer? But as I’ve learned over the past few years, the connection between diet and health is much deeper than we realize.

The Sandwich: A Staple of My Life
From the time I was a child, sandwiches were a staple in my diet. Packed with meats, cheeses, and spreads, it was the go-to meal for school lunches, work breaks, and everything in between. There was something undeniably comforting about biting into a freshly made sandwich—whether it was a classic ham and cheese, a BLT, or a hearty club. I never thought twice about the impact it could have on my health. Like most people, I believed it was just food—a simple pleasure we all deserve.
However, as I learned the hard way, not all foods are created equal when it comes to our long-term health.
The Link Between Processed Foods and Bowel Cancer
The type of sandwiches I was regularly enjoying—those packed with processed meats—may have been more harmful than I ever realized. Research has increasingly shown a strong link between processed meats, such as bacon, sausages, and deli meats, and a heightened risk of developing bowel cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) even classified processed meats as a “Group 1 carcinogen,” which means they are considered a direct cause of cancer.
In hindsight, I see that many of my favorite sandwiches were filled with these very processed meats. The ham, salami, turkey, and other cold cuts were often loaded with preservatives, nitrates, and sodium, all of which contribute to the risk of cancer. But at the time, I didn’t know that what I was eating regularly could slowly be taking a toll on my body.

The Silent Danger of Dietary Habits
It wasn’t just the processed meats, though. I’d also consume sandwiches packed with white bread and other highly refined carbohydrates. These foods, often considered “empty calories,” contribute little to no nutritional value and can lead to obesity, inflammation, and a higher risk of diseases like cancer.
For many years, I didn’t pay much attention to the effects of these foods on my body. I didn’t feel sick, so I didn’t think there was anything to worry about. But looking back now, I realize how dangerous my routine was. By continuing to consume a diet rich in processed meats and refined carbs, I unknowingly increased my vulnerability to conditions like bowel cancer, which quietly develops over time without obvious symptoms.
The Wake-Up Call
When I was diagnosed with bowel cancer, it hit me like a freight train. How could something so serious happen to someone so young? As I began to research the disease, I started to connect the dots. The risk factors, the dietary habits, the foods I’d been eating without a second thought—all of it began to make sense. I was living proof that our eating habits, no matter how seemingly harmless, can have lasting effects on our health.
It was then that I realized: my love for sandwiches, particularly the ones filled with processed meats, may have been a major contributing factor. Though I don’t want to place all the blame on one food item, the reality is that consistently eating processed foods like these, especially over a lifetime, significantly increases the risk of developing cancer.
A Warning to Others
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my journey with bowel cancer, it’s that we must be more mindful of what we eat. While a sandwich here and there may not seem harmful, it’s the long-term habits that matter. The choices we make daily—not just occasionally—can impact our health in ways we don’t always see coming.
If you’re someone who, like me, has enjoyed a diet rich in processed foods, now is the time to reassess. Start considering healthier alternatives: lean meats, plant-based fillings, whole grains, and fresh vegetables. If you can’t imagine your sandwich without the processed meats, try swapping them out for healthier proteins like chicken, turkey, or even a veggie-based patty. It’s not about completely eliminating what we love but finding a healthier balance.
Taking Control of Our Health
Though my battle with cancer is far from over, I am determined to take control of my health. I’ve completely restructured my diet, focusing on foods that nourish rather than harm. In the process, I’ve come to realize just how important it is to prioritize not only what we eat but also how it affects us in the long run.
If you’re reading this, I urge you to take a closer look at your own eating habits. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Make informed decisions, and understand that the foods we consume can either heal or hurt our bodies.
My hope is that by sharing my experience, others might avoid making the same mistakes I did. Bowel cancer can affect anyone, but we have the power to reduce our risks by being more conscious of what we put on our plates. Let my journey be your warning—your health is far too precious to ignore.
