The cruelty that some humans can inflict on dogs is deeply disturbing, and far too often, these innocent animals endure unimaginable pain. One such case involved a dog named Buddy, whose face was severely burned in a horrifying attack. However, with the help of compassionate veterinarians, Buddy has made a miraculous recovery.
According to a Tunica Humane Society report from April 2021, Buddy, described as a “happy and carefree” dog who was “never a threat to anyone,” was set on fire. He was found with an extension cord wrapped around his neck, his face completely charred. A child later admitted to setting Buddy on fire, but due to his age (under twelve), he couldn’t be charged.
Buddy was placed under the care of the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi, and Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine provided him with much-needed medical treatment. His recovery began slowly but showed signs of hope.
“Buddy’s vital signs are good, but like any burn patient, this is just the beginning of a long journey,” said Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, an associate professor and veterinary surgeon.
Despite the severity of the injury, Buddy did not lose his eyesight, and doctors believed his eyes would heal with medical treatment. His bandages were changed regularly, and Buddy kept a positive attitude throughout it all. He was even learning basic commands as part of his recovery. The staff at the Humane Society expressed that Buddy “never let his doctors down” and were thrilled with the progress made during his skin grafts.
While Buddy’s injuries were devastating, his story inspired many, and as time passed, his progress was remarkable. Buddy’s wounds began to heal, and the bandages on his ears were finally removed. He became more joyful and lively, his personality shining through once again.
On August 7, a major milestone was reached in Buddy’s recovery. After more than three months of being completely bandaged, his eyes were uncovered without the need for heavy sedation. For the first time since the attack, Buddy was able to see. “Yes, Buddy is still able to see in response to your countless prayers,” the Humane Society wrote.
The last time Buddy saw before the attack was when his face was set on fire, and his entire life was changed in an instant. Being able to see again was a significant step toward recovery, and Buddy’s behavior began to change as he became more playful and joyful. He was even seen carrying a large ball around and playing fetch, showing signs of his old self.
Though Buddy has made incredible strides, his journey is far from over. He still requires special care, including wearing sunscreen outdoors, as his skin is sensitive, and his eyes may need further treatment. Buddy’s story serves as a reminder of the cruelty some animals face but also highlights the power of kindness, compassion, and the remarkable resilience of animals.
Thanks to the efforts of countless people who worked to save him, Buddy is recovering miraculously, and the love and care he receives continue to help him heal.
