Johnny Tillotson, the legendary voice behind the timeless hit “Poetry in Motion,” has passed away at the age of 86.
Tillotson was one of those rare artists whose music seemed to flow effortlessly whenever he sang. Known for his remarkable talent in rock ‘n’ roll, pop, and country, he not only had a beautiful voice but was also beloved for his down-to-earth and kind nature.
Born in 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida, Johnny rose to fame in 1961 with the up-tempo classic “Poetry in Motion,” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard charts. The following year, his success continued with “Without You,” which landed in the Top 10 at No. 7. As one of the last great teen idols of the 1960s, his impact on music was undeniable.

He was also one of the pioneers of the countrypolitan sound, bridging the gap between pop and country music with rare crossover hits. His songwriting talents were just as impressive, having penned unforgettable songs like “It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'” and “You Can Never Stop Me Loving You,” which were later covered by icons like Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, and Elvis Presley.
While his final studio album came out in 1977, Tillotson continued to tour and record music throughout his life, releasing his final single, “Not Enough,” in 2010, and his last song, “Everything I Touch Turns to Blue,” just days before his passing.

Johnny Tillotson’s death was due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy, their family, and several nieces and nephews.
In a heartfelt post, his wife Nancy expressed her grief, saying, “It is with a broken heart that I write to let you know that the sweetest, kindest man I ever met, Johnny Tillotson, left earth for Heaven yesterday. He was my best beloved, Champion of my realm, Knight of my heart.”
