Tragic Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake Claims Numerous Lives: Skyscrapers Shake as Panic Over Collapsing Buildings Spreads

Witnesses have shared chilling accounts of the earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand, leaving 150 dead and hundreds injured. The powerful quake, which occurred on Friday, killed 694 in Myanmar and caused significant damage, with the toll expected to rise further.

A resident of Kolkata, Safdar, who was in Bangkok during the earthquake, described his experience to ANI. He recalled being on the road when the tremors hit, witnessing skyscrapers shaking and water spilling from an infinity pool. Though there were fears that buildings might collapse, no major destruction occurred. Public transport was suspended for several hours following the event.

Another eyewitness, Sanjiv Dutta, who was traveling back to Kolkata from Bangkok, shared that his bed began shaking when the earthquake struck. He saw buildings swaying and people running in panic. He descended from the seventh floor and waited on the ground floor. The chaos caused significant traffic, and it took him 5-6 hours to cover just 30 kilometers.

Ranjan Banerjee, a passenger from Bangkok who arrived in Kolkata on Saturday, said that while the situation was calm now, there had been a state of emergency during the earthquake. Malls and offices were evacuated, and the Metro system was shut down.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.7, struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, and was followed by aftershocks, including one measuring 6.4. The tremors were also felt in Thailand, where six people were killed, 22 were injured, and 101 went missing due to collapsed construction sites. Myanmar, located in an active earthquake zone, frequently experiences tremors, although many occur in less populated areas.
